Conference of Speakers Urges Unified Action Against Escalating Terrorist Attacks

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the recent surge in terrorist attacks across several states, including Plateau, Borno, Benue, Niger, and Kwara. These heinous acts have resulted in tragic loss of lives, widespread displacement, and severe trauma for countless Nigerians.

In a strongly worded statement, the Conference condemned the escalating insecurity and called for urgent, coordinated action at all levels of government to address the crisis. "The time for mere condemnation and rhetoric has passed. It is imperative that decisive measures are taken to end these bloodbaths and restore peace and order," the statement read.

While acknowledging that defense and national security fall under the Federal Government's jurisdiction, the Conference emphasized that all levels of government share the responsibility for ensuring the safety and welfare of citizens. State governors were urged to prioritize security and governance beyond ceremonial functions, focusing on the protection of lives and alleviation of suffering.

The Conference called on state governments to complement federal efforts by enacting and enforcing laws that support community policing and grassroots-driven security initiatives. It stressed the importance of proactive frameworks that integrate local intelligence, social support systems, and youth engagement to combat insecurity effectively.

Additionally, the Conference urged the Federal Government to address the economic hardships faced by Nigerians due to inflation, unemployment, and the rising cost of living. It called for transparent and impactful relief initiatives to ease the burden on citizens and foster trust between the government and the people.

Reaffirming its commitment to legislative actions that promote justice, security, and inclusive governance, the Conference declared that the killings in Benue, Niger, Plateau, Borno, Kwara, and other parts of Nigeria must not continue unchecked. "Justice must prevail, and peace must be restored," the statement concluded.

The Conference of Speakers reiterated that the safety, dignity, and well-being of every Nigerian must remain the top priority for all arms and levels of government.
